| In 1983 the NSW State Government approved redevelopment of Cumberland Oval under a special Local Environment Plan, imposing strict environmental controls.
| The Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust was nominated by the NSW Government to be the authority responsible for the development program and for the management of the completed facilities.
The project was jointly funded by the Federal and NSW State Governments.
Civil and Civic won the contract for the design and construction of Parramatta Stadium against a field of eight competitors in November 1984.
The project was to be completed in time for the 1986 football season, with all design and construction work being substantially completed within a 12 month period.
Parramatta Stadium was designed to be an international standard venue for Rugby League, Rugby Union and Soccer.
Earth mounding around the Stadium provides a visual and acoustic barrier: extensive landscaping integrates the Stadium complex into the overall environment of Parramatta Park.
The grandstands have low roof profile so they blend into the surrounding trees.
The playing surface has been excavated 3 metres into the ground and seating extends to within 6 metres of the sidelines to generate an intimate amphitheatre atmosphere.
Full amenities including changeroom and training rooms are provided for players in a complex of facilities located beneath the western grandstand.
